(Video) The Next iPhone Embodied in a Super-Thin Prototype

Everyone wants to know what the next iPhone will look like, but the folks at Giga.de took it a step further and created a prototype based on rumors and credible hints — and it looks great.
Its teardrop design makes it only 6.86 mm thick at the top and only 5.33 mm at the bottom, and it’s a bit wider than iPhone 4 — 59.94 mm vs. 58.6 mm — to accommodate for the bigger, 4-inch screen.
Also, the mechanical round button on the front of the device has been changed to an oval-shaped capacitive one.
No one can say whether the new iPhone will look anything like this one — for all we know, it might be just an improved version of the iPhone 4, but it’s as good a guess as any, and we certainly wouldn’t mind if Apple’s designers had taken the device in a similar direction.
Check out the video below (in German, with English subtitles) for a walk-through of the prototype and the full gallery at Giga.de.

Facebook, It’s Time To Kill the Poke

Facebook has gone a half step to putting the Poke out of its misery — but I don’t see why they don’t kill it off completely. Would we really miss it?
Last week, when launching the new Facebook subscribe button, the social network hid the much-maligned “Poke” button behind a settings menu, making it pretty unlikely that visitors to your profile page will see it.
Guess what: Facebook users didn’t notice.
While there was a minor backlash about the new real-time Ticker at the top of the site, not to mention the Top News section at the top of your news feed, only a handful of eagle-eyed bloggers noticed that the Poke button had virtually been retired. This from a community that balks at the slightest change.
What’s more, Facebook’s huge upcoming redesign (Facebook Timeline) keeps the Poke button behind this same dropdown menu — there are no plans to make it visible again.
Here’s my problem with the poke: What the heck does it mean?
I originally assumed that Poking was merely flirting: a subtle way to get the attention of another Facebook user. And yet just less than half of my Pokes are from males. So again: What does a Poke mean? And should we take a Poke to be flirtatious when it could, in my case, just as easily mean “Hey, I just sent you a press release about my new app”?
Facebook doesn’t even know what a Poke means, with the Help page reading: “The poke feature can be used for a variety of things on Facebook. For instance, you can poke your friends to say hello.” Ah, so they’re either saying hello, or flirting, or pestering … or something completely different.
If you’re going to Poke someone, isn’t there a better way to get your message across? Perhaps send them a Facebook Message? Like or comment on one of their updates? And isn’t it the case that a good percentage of Pokes are intended as ironic?
Or perhaps I’m wrong: Is there a huge group of Facebook Poke fans out there? Do I just need to be college-aged to understand the wonder of the Poke? Perhaps we all love to complain about the Poke but secretly love it? Let me know in the comments.

[Video] Canadian Mother Will Broadcast Her Natural Birth Online

"A chiropracter in Ottawa gave an unusual invitation to the World Wide Web this week.
“Hi, I’m Dr. Nancy Salgueiro with YourBirthCoach.com,” she said in a YouTube video, “and I’d like to invite you into my home to watch my live birth online.”
The mother of two, who runs a website that promotes natural birth, has set up a sign-up list for access to the live stream on that site and her Facebook Page. About 800 people have already signed up to watch, according to Canadian television station CBC. Her 2-year-old son will cut the umbilical chord.
Even the thought of a front seat to the miracle of life is enough to make many people’s stomachs turn. And that is exactly Salgueiro’s point.
“The reason why I’m doing this is because in our culture we’ve created this idea with fear and this visual image of what birth is,” she says, “and we don’t know what to expect when we’re going to give birth. And I really believe it’s important for women to see what normal, natural birth is like.”
Although she’s made videotapes of her previous births public, and there a wide variety of YouTube videos dedicated to natural births, she says that being able to check in on the entire process, not just the point where the baby enters the world, is an important factor that will be achieved with a live video stream.
“There’s only so much variation to how a baby comes out,” she says.
Salgueiro’s intentions seem more in line with a teacher’s than a reality TV star’s. The sign-up sheet to be notified when she goes into labor begins, “Attention: Natural Birthing Moms To Be.” But it’s easy to understand why she’s getting attention — and not all positive — from a much more diverse crowd.
Commenters on the websites of several Canadian television stations that covered the story have accused her of attention grabbing, removing the last private arena from the world and being gross. “What happens if something goes wrong during the birth?,” “Is she looking for sponsors?,” they ask.
The audience for which the live stream is intended — women considering natural births — seems to be appreciative.
“I am 2 1/2 months pregnant with my first, and planning a homebirth with this baby,” reads one of manysupportive messages on her website. “I think this is wonderful and empowering, and you are very brave.”

Lil Wayne Covers VIBE

"Bow down. Dwayne Carter’s got the Vibe (no Guy) as your highness takes the cover of the October/November issue of VIBE. Below are excerpts of his cover story." - Big Homie
VIBE: You say competition is for the “old guys,” but it sounds like you’re going at Jay-Z with that line, “I got your baby money/Kidnap your bitch, get that how-much-you-love-your-lady money.” Are we looking at it the wrong way?
LIL WAYNE: I know for a fact, music is about perception. You can’t do anything but perceive what you hear. If I know that for a fact, I can never be upset about someone’s reaction to it. I’m not gonna say I don’t know what will happen before I say it [on record]. I do know what will happen. I am aware of it. It is what it is.
VIBE: You mentioned how humbled you were at the success of “She Will.” Drake, who wrote and performs the song’s chorus, has now become a platinum star in his own right. Do you look at the guy and say, “Wow, I helped create a monster, I have to stay on my toes”?
LIL WAYNE: I don’t look at it like that. Drake is my artist. If he wasn’t my artist, then yeah maybe. But that’s my artist. He’s not [just] a friend. We’re more than friends. It’s business. It would be impossible for it to be a competition. I mean, I’m the guy’s boss.

Osama Bin Laden Photos Must Stay Secret?

Osama Bin Laden Photos

WASHINGTON — Public disclosure of graphic photos and video taken of Osama bin Laden after he was killed in May by U.S. commandos would damage national security and lead to attacks on American property and personnel, the Obama administration contends in a court documents.
In a response late Monday to a Freedom of Information Act lawsuit filed by Judicial Watch, a conservative watchdog group seeking the imagery, Justice Department attorneys said the CIA has located 52 photographs and video recordings. But they argued the images of the deceased bin Laden are classified and are being withheld from the public to avoid inciting violence against Americans overseas and compromising secret systems and techniques used by the CIA and the military.
The Justice Department has asked the court to dismiss Judicial Watch's lawsuit because the records the group wants are "wholly exempt from disclosure," according to the filing.
Tom Fitton, president of Judicial Watch, accused the Obama administration of making a "political decision" to keep the bin Laden imagery secret. "We shouldn't throw out our transparency laws because complying with them might offend terrorists," Fitton said in a statement. "The historical record of Osama bin Laden's death should be released to the American people as the law requires."
The Associated Press has filed Freedom of Information Act requests to review a range of materials, such as contingency plans for bin Laden's capture, reports on the performance of equipment during the May 1 assault on his compound in Abbottabad, Pakistan, and copies of DNA tests confirming the al-Qaida leader's identity. The AP also has asked for video and photographs taken from the mission, including photos made of bin Laden after he was killed.
The Obama administration refused AP's request to quickly consider its request for the records. AP appealed the decision, arguing that unnecessary bureaucratic delays harm the public interest and allow anonymous U.S. officials to selectively leak details of the mission. Without expedited processing, requests for sensitive materials can be delayed for months and even years. The AP submitted its request to the Pentagon less than one day after bin Laden's death.
In a declaration included in the documents, John Bennett, director of the CIA's National Clandestine Service, said many of the photos and video recordings are "quite graphic, as they depict the fatal bullet wound to (bin Laden) and other similarly gruesome images of his corpse." Images were taken of bin Laden's body at the Abbottabad compound, where he was killed by a Navy SEAL team, and during his burial at sea from the USS Carl Vinson, Bennett said.
"The public release of the responsive records would provide terrorist groups and other entities hostile to the United States with information to create propaganda which, in turn, could be used to recruit, raise funds, inflame tensions, or rally support for causes and actions that reasonably could be expected to result in exceptionally grave damage to both the national defense and foreign relations of the United States," Bennett wrote.
Navy Adm. William McRaven, the top officer at U.S. Special Operations Command, said in a separate declaration that releasing the imagery could put the special operations team that carried out the assault on bin Laden's compound at risk by making them "more readily identifiable in the future." Before his current assignment, McRaven led the Joint Special Operations Command, the organization in charge of the military specialized counterterrorism units.

Vicki Reveron Finds Bad Word On Her Starbucks Cup

A formerly loyal Starbucks customer found something unexpected on her cup of morning mud.
New York City native Vicki Reveron told WABC that the word "bitch" was scrawled across the cup she was served at the 8th Avenue and 35th Street Starbucks.
"It says b--ch, my name is not b--ch, it's Vicki," Reveron said.
As you can see from the image below, the cup clearly does not say "Vicki" (though maybe it says 'Bith'?)

How much does it REALLY cost you to drive?

When considering the cost of driving, most people think only about how much they pay for gas. Drivers also pay to buy and maintain a car, including tune-ups, oil and tires, as well as for insurance, registration, and parking.
Indirect costs of driving, such as road construction and maintenance, add to drivers’ financial burden through taxes and fees. In addition, there are quality of life costs that drivers and non-drivers alike pay to support automobile transportation. Though challenging to quantify, these added impacts include air pollution, traffic congestion, and health care.
Use this educational tool to calculate both your out-of-pocket Direct Driver's Expenses and the Indirect Costs of your driving habits. Once you consider the true cost of driving alone, other transportation options such as carpooling, vanpooling, riding the bus, walking, riding a bike or telecommuting may look more attractive. Call 831.429.POOL or visit us online at commutesolutions.org for a list of potential carpool partners or for help planning your next bike, bus or walking trip to from, or within Santa Cruz County, CA. For more information about how these expenses are determined, please visit the True Cost of Driving Article.

TO CALCULATE YOUR TRUE COST OF DRIVING...

  • Enter information about your commute and driving habits.
  • Use the driver costs provided (based on California driving conditions) or change amounts to reflect your own expenses.
  • The calculator gives you your annual vehicle mileage and calculates your true cost of driving.

How to Really Get Healthy Teeth?

The world of dental health is getting a whole lot handier — in the last 10 years, many oral care products that once required a prescription have become available over-the-counter. Why? “There was such a demand for teeth-whitening systems and other products that were sold at dentists’ offices that companies started making versions to sell in drugstores and supermarkets,” says Fred Freedman, director of marketing for the Dental Trade Alliance.
And dental health researchers are constantly putting products head to head in clinical trials and studies to find out which ones work best. So before you head to your dentist’s office for some fancy-shmancy product — such as a grinding guard or high-tech toothbrush — try the drugstore. Here’s a look at some dental health products that may be worth investing in.

Michael Vick unsure about next week...

PHILADELPHIA — Eagles quarterback Michael Vick is uncertain whether he’ll be able to play next weekend against the 49ers, after breaking his right (non-throwing) hand during Sunday’s 29-16 loss to the Giants. (Editor's note: Eagles coach Andy Reid announced on Monday that Vick had a bruise, not a break, on his right hand. Read more here.)
Vick also thinks he is being hit late every week by opponents, but that referees are not calling penalties when they are warranted. Vick was injured when he was hit by defensive tackle Chris Canty after completing a pass to Jeremy Maclin in the third quarter. Vick, who suffered a concussion last week, thought Canty’s hit should have been a penalty.
“I felt like I got hit late—there’s no flag, broke my hand,” Vick said. “I was trying to protect myself. Didn’t get a flag. That’s pretty much been the story the last three weeks. Obviously at some point, something catastrophic is going to happen.
“I just think more protection should be taken when I’m inside the pocket. You look at all the replays … I’m on the ground every time. I’d be lying if I sat here and said I wasn’t frustrated right now.”
Asked if he felt he was not getting calls that other quarterbacks get, Vick said, “Absolutely. The refs got to do their jobs as well.”
